When Trish Cetrone, the president of a home-based public-relations-and-marketing firm in Orinda, California, first started her business, she avoided out-of-the-office meetings like the plague. "I was really focused on billable hours. I didn't want to waste work time fighting the crazy Bay-area traffic," she recalls. But after a few clients insisted on some face-to-face sessions, she realized that "efficiency isn't everything," and she began to welcome the break. "When you work from home, you have to force yourself to get out regularly," says Cetrone, who now makes sure to plan meetings with colleagues and clients at least once a month.

According to the National Association for the Self-Employed, an organization based in Washington, D.C., the nation has 17 million home-based entrepreneurs like Cetrone, many of whom are constantly faced with the isolation that comes from being a one-person operation. The same goes for full-time telecommuters, especially long-distance ones. While most home-based workers relish their situations, spending the majority of your workday solo is inevitably draining; virtual contact via email or phone can only go so far. The adjustment is often especially difficult if you've just made the transition from the busy, bustling corporate world to the quiet of your home.

Finding creative ways to beat this loneliness is important if you're going to succeed long-term. "You have to create the right kind of environment and schedule from the beginning," says Rudy Lewis, the president of the National Association of Home Based Businesses. "If you're alone too much, feelings of isolation can worsen as you grow your business."

The only way to beat isolation is to get out and make human contact. But if you're trying to build a business—or please a faraway boss—it may be a struggle for you to walk away from your desk, even for an hour. "It's okay to give yourself permission to be out of your office," assures Ellen Parlapiano, the coauthor of Mompreneurs: A Mother's Practical Step-by-Step Guide to Work-at-Home Success (Perigee). You may also find it difficult to escape if one of your goals in working at home is to spend more time with your children. "Even though you may be paying for child care, you should still take a break and see others during the day—just as you would if you were working in a big company and went out to lunch with a coworker," says Cetrone, who has two daughters, a six-month-old and a three-year-old.

Time-out Strategies

Replace your chained-to-the-desk habits with these new ones:

  • Get involved with local chapters of professional associations in your industry and/or your chamber of commerce.
This has the added bonus of allowing you to network. "Going to business-related events is constructive for your career and can keep you from burning out," says Deborah Arron, a Seattle career consultant. Most organizations have monthly meetings and various committees and boards that you can join. To give yourself extra incentive to participate, offer to chair a committee or organize a special event.

  • Pay in advance to attend events.
That way, you'll feel almost forced to go, advises Arron. Knowing up front that you have a function to attend will allow you to better budget your time while you work.

  • Start your own group.
Joining professional organizations is a good way to meet other mothers in your field. Use this as a stepping stone to form a small circle of such moms who meet on a regular basis, recommends Parlapiano. She founded a group of her own eight years ago.

  • Consider combining time away from the office with an outing with your child.
New York City career consultant Eva Wisnik has taken her six-year-old son, David, with her to clients' offices to drop off holiday gifts. These brief meetings—five to ten minutes each—allowed her clients to get to know her on a more personal basis, plus they gave her son a taste of the business world. But, she cautions, "I wouldn't do this with an infant. Take a child who is old enough to understand the concept of a 'client,' and keep meetings brief."

A Top Rated Home Business For Mom!

By: Roger Staubus CPA

This article rates a home business opportunity using my "New Approach for Rating Home Business Opportunities," of 11 major and 7 minor attributes. Each major attribute can be worth 7 points, while each minor attribute can be worth 3 points, with 98 points as a perfect score. Of course, there are no perfect scores for home business opportunities. The 11 major attributes are-

* Product or service
* Product price and market competition
* Company
* Proven business system
* Available Support system
* Available training and resources
* Compensation system
* Profitability - has good profit margins
* Costs involved - both startup and recurring costs
* Will I have full control over my business?
* Can I work this business at my own pace?

The 7 minor attributes are-

* How is the product delivered to the customer?
* Does the product/service have an automated delivery capability?
* Is the Company "On the Net" and E-Commerce enabled?
* Are you supplied with business tools to make your life easier?
* What level of administration is required?
* Consider whether you will be ahead of or behind the trends?
* How great is the potential to make money in this business?

The Company is Sensaria, a Washington state private company that sells Natural Body Care products. The product line includes Skin Care, Body Care, Sun Care, Home Care, and Hair Care products, all of which are sold by individual representatives. There are about 3,600 representatives. The Skin Care and Hair Care products (not makeup) are naturally based with no chemicals, which many people prefer, are consumable and representatives have personal web sites which customers may go to for repeat product purchases. Sensaria is a member of the Direct Selling Organization, which is a significant consideration. The company is about 20 years old, but has been using direct sales for the last five years.

Representatives schedule and hold Spa Parties where products are sampled and introduced, used and sold. The parties are fun events for women and those in attendance have a good time. Representatives plan for product sales, to book additional parties with those in attendance, and to recruit new representatives for the company, with individuals seeking to earn additional income. The cost to become a representative is $180, and another $50 for items that representatives use at Spa parties and for office supplies. Even though each representative has a personal web site for product re-orders, this business opportunity is an offline opportunity, as compared to an online internet business opportunity.

Eleven Major Attributes

* Products are very well received. Women love these products and purchase them eagerly. Samples used at the Spa parties are very effective in producing product sales. This major attribute is the crucially important one for this home-based opportunity. Because the products are consumable, this is a very favorable situation for a representative. This attribute gets a 7 rating.
* Product pricing is competitive in the market place and market competition is moderate. In this instance, a 5 is awarded for this attribute.
* The company is well respected, stable, and can be counted on to deliver on promises made. So this consideration gets a 7 rating.
* Proven business system. Sensaria has a very effective business system for beginning reps that includes getting Spa parties scheduled, presentations for the party, securing bookings for additional parties at each party, and prospecting for potential new representatives. Free products provide good motivation for individuals agreeing to host a party. After a Spa party, each rep has a business suite installed on their personal computer which allows the rep to transmit the orders to the company for efficient order processing. This consideration gets a 7 rating.
* The available support system is generally good, as each new rep has an upline person for questions and problems that may arise. This consideration gets a 5 rating.
* Available training and support is good for this company. New reps attend teleclasses to learn the ropes as beginning home-business entrepreneurs. Teleclasses are one hour in length and about 50 individuals may be involved in each call. More experienced representatives conduct these teleclasses.
This consideration gets a 6 rating.
* The Compensation system is a good one. Each rep earns 30% of the product sales value for each party, and has the chance for bonus amounts each month based on their total product sales. These bonus amounts vary from 6% to 9% of product sales for the month. In addition, a rep earns a 5% override for any reps they have recruited. After 3 recruits, the overrides go four levels deep. For any checks received at the parties, the rep deposits them to her bank account, and remits 70% of the sales value to the company via credit card payments. So rep earnings accumulate quickly during each month, and are available immediately. This consideration gets a 6 rating.
* Costs involved are $180 for the beginning product kit, and approximately $50 for supplies, most of which can be purchased at low-cost at Wal-Mart. The rep will have travel costs to and from each Spa party, and office supplies will be needed for record keeping purchases.
* Will I have full control over my business? The answer here is an unequivocal yes. There are no monthly sales quotas, but purchases of $75 wholesale are necessary to remain active. A rep can go inactive periodically without penalties. This attribute gets a 6 rating.
* Can I work this business at my own pace? The answer is yes, and this attribute gets a 6 rating.

Seven Minor Attributes

* How is the product delivered? The products sold at a Spa party are shipped to the hostess for that party and she delivers the products to customers who purchased. This consideration gets a 2 rating.
* Does the product/service have an automated delivery capability? Not in the sense that e-Books and software can be delivered immediately as downloads after purchase. Each rep has a web site for customer re-orders and they are shipped to their home address. This consideration gets a 2 rating.
* Is the company "On the Net" and E-Commerce enabled? Yes, this consideration gets a 3 rating.
* Are you supplied with business tools to make your life easier? Yes, each rep gets a business suite for submitting orders and other tools as well. This attribute gets a 2 rating.
* What level of administration is required? Keeping customer records, party records, contact records are required for a rep to be effective, and to earn as much as possible. This attribute gets a 2.
* Consider whether you will be ahead of or behind the trends. I don't know the answer for this one, so I am not assigning any number for this consideration.
* How great is the potential to make money in this business? It has very good potential, a new rep can earn from $800 to $1,000 in their first month. Downlines can be willed to family heirs. This attribute gets a 3 rating.

Total Score

The Company has scored a total of 66 points on the 11 major attributes, and 14 points for the 7 minor attributes, yielding a grand total score of 80. This rating approach requires a 90+ for an Excellent rating, 70+ for a Good rating, 50+ for an Average rating, 30+ for a Poor rating, with zip for an opportunity considered to be a scam. Based on this approach, this is a GOOD home business opportunity.

It’s simple, money is freedom in this country. Freedom to live the life you want to live. Debts and bills trap us into a job we may hate and a life where there is never enough time to do anything we really want to.

Take a look at how much money you make at your job per hour. Then subtract taxes. Now, deduct all your work expenses, just like a business. Gas, car maintenance, clothes, food or work supplies, special school or education. Now figure your hourly wage. Don’t forget driving time and day care. Not a pretty picture is it?

Think about how your life would change if you didn’t have to go to work anymore. What if you made all the money you needed from home. Figure up how much monthly expense would be saved. The whole list from above. Look at the numbers. To live and sustain a comfortable lifestyle for you. Add up the numbers and find your monthly living needs, your baseline monthly needs.

CUT COSTS AT WORK

If you must work away from home here’s some tips to cut down on the cost.

1. Work closer to home
2. Work 4/10 hour days
3. Wear out work clothes before buying new
4. Work overtime the same day as opposed to extra days

Obviously, the best case scenario would be to make enough money from home to cover our expenses. There are many, many people doing just that with a home-based business. We already know how much you’d save by working from home. Let’s look at a few more advantages to a home-based business.

The first advantage is money. Even if you still work full-time for someone else, imagine how much more quickly you could pay off all your debts if you bring in an extra $200-$600 a month. A part-time home-based business could easily make this much. And you could do something you’re already good at and enjoy. Auto repair, home repair, babysitting, yard work, making crafts and selling them, garage sales and almost any hobby you have can be turned into a money-making endeavor.

How big your business grows is up to you. If you provide a product or service with mass appeal and market it well, you could be on your way to full-time home employment. But even if that’s not your ambition, just making extra money from something you enjoy doing anyway can be very satisfying both emotionally and financially.

SOME HOME-BASED BUSINESS IDEAS

MLM – Multi-Level Marketing or MLM is one of the most popular home-based business plans going. Its strength lies in the duplication of the sales plan and the creation of monthly income from past sales. If you like the idea of MLM make sure you pick a product and company you really believe in.

MAIL-ORDER – This is a relatively easy and inexpensive business you can start from home. You can pick any field you know and like. Stick to your strengths. Writing a small book or manual on fly fishing and then maybe making some flies and selling them all through the mail is one idea. You can put together an entire product line based on your hobby or interest. A newsletter on bird watching with facts about different birds that you put out once a month. Give away free copies to entice them to subscribe. Follow that up with a book you write about bird watching. Only your imagination and your willingness to put some effort into it limit the fields.

Having a business of your own is one of the most gratifying feelings in the world. Especially when it’s a field you love. You will put hours and hours of thought and work into it and it will seem like fun. Trust me, I know. And when you reap the benefits (financial and emotional) of your work you will truly feel like you’ve found your place in this world.

There is a big difference between making a living and creating a life. So many of us get caught up in our day to day living and we don’t see the big picture. There is so much more to life and each one of us has a burning desire to do “something”. It’s there, it may be pushed way down inside but trust me it’s there.

I can write until my arm falls off and it won’t matter one bit to you until you do one thing. TAKE ACTION!! If you want more money, don’t go looking for a better job, find a way to capitalize on your strengths on the things you already love to do. That will bring you the satisfaction you’re looking for. Not tomorrow, not next month, the time is now. Put together a plan, think it through and go after it. If it fails, take what you learned, change your plan and go again. It takes just as much energy to live and not try to get what you want as it does to try to get everything you want. Life pays exactly what you ask of it. This journey may seem long but believe me, it will be a labor of love. So come on, get going.

GOOD LUCK!!

Using sample business plans and their structure, along with studying as many business plan examples as you can, will provide you with the necessary framework to consider your business from every possible angle.

Starting or running your business without a business plan is akin to being a human without a skeleton!

Not only will using a sample structure highlight any areas you haven't fully thought through, but it will also provide you with a good idea of what makes a good business plan, and what doesn't.

The importance of your business plan as a motivational factor in running or starting your business cannot be underestimated. You will find that your commitment continues to build as you collect information, research and write each section.

Your business plan should always accompany requests for Small Business Loans , and lenders or any kind of angel investor will simply refuse to consider your business proposal without one.

Lenders and investors want to see your plan with the aim of satisfying key questions before they make their decision to grant funding or not.

Once you’ve commenced trading your small business plan will act as a steak in the ground, and help you measure where you expected to be against where you actually are. It will help youtake corrective action as necessary.

Sample Business Plan Structure

All plans should include at least the elements listed below, and perhaps additional sections depending on the type of industry.

Executive Summary
Company Background
Products or Service Overview
Unique Selling Proposition and competitive advantages
The Marketplace
Operations
Leadership and management profiles including professional competencies
Professional Support
Risks and Threats assessment
Financial forecasts including key assumptions
Relevant appendices

Collecting the information for all the sections is time consuming and sometimes difficult. The business section of your local library is always a good place to start research. Ask your friendly librarian about how to look up market research reports, and how to investigate competitors.

If you are not familiar with spreadsheet software, constructing the necessary financial forecasts represents a significant hurdle. You have 2 choices:

Pay someone to put part or all of the plan together for you, or a small investment in some business planning software.

The advantage of using a professional is you will receive the benefits of their experience, combined with a professional looking plan.

The disadvantage is that it won’t be easy to make changes, and more importantly, because you will not have been as involved in its preparation, you won’t be as familiar with its contents as you should be. Make sure to learn the contents well.

One final tip though, remember it’s the quality of the information you put into it that determines what comes out.

The importance of monitoring your website
By: Douglas Titchmarsh
Email IMPACT Today!
Printer friendly page
Top

Are you monitoring your website?
You should be, especially if you are using it
to make some extra cash, and definitely if
it is your only source of income.

You need to monitor your website to protect
it from so many nasties which could affect your
bottom line. Any of the following could bring
your site to a close.

A hack attack.
If your website is hacked, it could be used
for any number of illegal activities.
A hacker could use your hosting
account to send uce (Spam) from your domain
or even add web pages such as user information
"phishing" sites. These sites will have a page
which looks like a login page for Paypal, Ebay
or any bank. If someone fills in the form their
details are sent to the hacker who now has
access to their account. Your website will be
shut down, and you lose money while you sort
out the mess.
If you have any user information stored on
your websites server, a hacker may also
gain access to that too, and personal information
is a very easy commodity to sell on.

Keep an eye on your site for any unexpected activity
or unusual stats showing for pages you didn't
make yourself. Most accounts have some kind of
statistics built in to the control panel so
it shouldn't cost too much to monitor visits
and hits, and to which pages they go.
Make sure any scripts you use are secure and
updated with any patches to keep the hackers
out too.

Hosting or server problems.
Your host, or server may have a problem, and
lose access to the internet, or crash taking
all sites hosted there down with them.
This gives you two potential headaches, firstly
loss of business while it is offline, but more
importantly you may lose data. Making sure you
take regular backups of all databases, and all
your sites pages will help, also monitoring how
often any outages occur, and how long each lasts
will tell you whether it's time to change hosts.

No host can guarantee with absolute certainty
100% uptime, but some are much more prone to
downtime than others. If you have all the
site information backed up, moving hosts isn't
as much of a task as it used to be, and can
be done in quite a short time if needed.
As hosting is such a cut throat business,
finding a new one is also relatively simple.
There are even software programs which will
alert you if your site is unavailable.

Blog and Forum spamming
With the all pervasive spread of blogging
it was inevitable that some people would
resort to spamming them. Forums and
message boards are also open to abuse
from software which will autopost to
thousands of sites in minutes.
If your blog is able to accept comments, it
is wise to ask for some kind of registration
from people who wish to make comments. If
you don't ask for registration you leave
your blog open to blatant advertising done
by software, which will be unlikely to bear
any relevance to your blogs subject.
This goes for your forums too, allowing
guests to post without registration is
open to abuse by widely available software
which autoposts inane comments with a signature
which contains a url to the spammers product.

Asking for registration will help ensure that
only people committed to posting something
relevant get to add their comments or
posts. If someone wants to post they will
take the time to register.

It may take a little time, but monitoring
your websites could save you from a lot
more wasted time in the future.
Backups of your site will help and should
be taken at least weekly, and all your
scripts should at least have security updates
as soon as they are released.

It's your site, make sure it stays in your
control.

Home Business & EXTREME REALITY of the Money Potentials on the Internet for 2006 You Must Know
By Manny Lourenco
Top

he Internet is growing faster than the world’s most brilliant scientists can even digest "today."

When you really dig deep into the science of the Internet, it is "very much so" fascinating, exciting, and also a little scary. Taking a glance at Nano-Technologies for example: Right now, it is swiftly moving into the Internet world.

Meaning: Over the next 2-4 years we are going to see amazing things taking place on the Internet.

Because the Nano-Technological end of things is making the brain of the computers faster and faster and yes, faster. This means that when new technologies emerge, the entire world will know about it faster than the speed of light.

Many world renowned scientists or geniuses in physics are saying "right now" that the United States Patent Department in the area of technology will be growing so fast that it will be mathematically impossible to even think about waiting to establish a patent.

Physicists are saying that the people who are going to be the most powerful people in the world over the next few years, are the small businesses that are keeping up with the trends on the Internet, keeping up also with the newest systems, and staying in constant touch with the world’s best in the game.

These people are you and me...:)

These are online marketing strategists who are able to move at the speed of light, can review a new product, new technology, or new trend and apply old school copywriting and advertising to them quickly reaching global markets within hours or few days. The old way's of becoming a software developer (for example) will not be among the new powerhouses, simply because it takes to much time.

For example: A software developer is focused in on a new program he is building that might take a few months or a lot longer while the online marketing strategist is on his 10th business all running on auto pilot.

Or the software guy just completed his new system while the online marketing guy got the same system in Japan 2 weeks ago.

The name of the game is speed and the skill to quickly differentiate the correct relevance’s of integrations at the right time.

For more articles that will keep you up to speed with everything outlined here or if you have an interest working with an online opportunity right now that is driving in $1000.00+ per day for regular average people...

How To Select Affiliate Programs
By Sanjay Johari                                       Top

Affiliate programs offer most promising opportunities to earn money, to grow contacts and to establish yourself on the net. But this is easier said than done. There are so many affiliate programs available – genuine programs and the other ones. Joining most of these programs is extremely easy. The natural question is – how do you locate good programs that will suit you?

This is an important question and needs careful consideration. It is better to do a little research before joining a program rather than realizing later that all is not well.

The first consideration is the reputation of the program. It is worthwhile doing some research on this to satisfy yourself. There can be several ways of doing it. You can get in contact with the person who referred the program to you and find out his experience with it. Visit the website of the program and look for testimonials. If you know someone who is well versed with internet marketing he can offer you some advice. There are also websites that evaluate various affiliate programs and you can find them quite easily by searching on Google.

There are affiliate directories which provide some details of hundreds of affiliate programs registered with them, such as:

http://www.cj.com
http://www.associateprograms.com
http://www.affiliatematch.com
http://www.becomeanaffiliate.com
http://www.affiliatedirectory.com
http://www.refer-it.com
http://www.linkshare.com
http://www.2-tier.com
http://www.lifetimecommissions.com

Generally affiliate programs found at these directories can be trusted because these directories do their own verification of the programs before registering them. However, this should not absolve you from doing your own little research.

Once this issue is settled to your satisfaction, you have crossed a big hurdle. I shall assume that you are interested in long term relationship and your own persistence with the program will count as much to your success as the benefits you get from the program.

Another consideration is how much it will cost to join the program. Many programs offer free affiliate membership and to that extent risk is minimized. Therefore it will be advisable to go for free or low cost affiliate programs unless you have definite information that it is worth paying for the program of your choice.

Payment schedule of the affiliate program is another issue to be considered. There are wide variations. Various programs pay weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly and some programs give immediate payments. There is now a tendency towards immediate payment and many affiliate programs are adopting it. This is facilitated by using payment processors like PayPal and Stormpay. The method of payment also varies – payments may be made by checks, direct deposit in the bank account or thru the payment processors. Also different programs have their own policy regarding minimum commission that must accrue before payments can be made to the affiliates. You will be in the best position to decide whether the program’s payment policy suits you.

Another factor to be considered is - what is the hit per sale ratio? This is the average number of hits to a banner or text link it takes to generate a sale based on all affiliate statistics. Many programs make this data available to the affiliates which is a big help. This factor is extremely important because this will tell you how much traffic you must generate before you are likely to earn a commission from the sale.

Now almost all the affiliate programs track the computers which are used to access the affiliate sites by placing cookies on those computers. The lifetime of these cookies varies from few months to the lifetime of the computer. This is necessary to give credit to the affiliate for any sales made thru his promotional efforts. The period of time that those cookies stay in the system is also important. This is because most of the time visitors do not buy initially but may want to return later to make the purchase. It will be advantageous to know if you will still get credit for the sale if it is done some months from a certain day.

Success of promotion can be improved only by trial and error. There is no fool-proof strategy which will work for all situations. This has to be done the hard way. The affiliate program should give ad-tracking services to their affiliates to keep track of their promotional campaigns. The data these services generate should be available online anytime you decide to check them out. Constantly checking your individual stats is important to know how many impressions, hits and sales are already generated from your site.

The affiliate program should offer physical goods, goods in electronic form and/or services of some value to their customers. As an affiliate you should have good knowledge about what the program offers. It will be to your advantage if you actually own and use any of those products – you will be able to narrate first-hand experience to your prospective customers. If by any chance you do not really understand what the program offers, it is better not to join such program.

Does the affiliate program have a single tier or multi-level structure? A single tier program pays you only for the business you have directly generated. A multi-level program pays you for the business, plus it also pays you a commission on the sales generated by any affiliate you sponsor in your program. Multi-level programs help you leverage your earnings which grow to huge amount with consistent effort. In the process you have a chance to get to know your up-line and down-line affiliates well and develop personal relationships with them.

Lastly, what is the commission paid by the program? What other payments are made by the program? There can be one time commission for selling a single item, recurring commission for services or memberships, leveraged earnings and bonus of various types. Understanding the compensation as well as affiliate structure is necessary for an affiliate.

These are some of the important considerations for evaluating an affiliate program. It is not a complete list by any means. The affiliate needs to remain watchful for surprises. Even then some element of risk will always be there. The success of the affiliate will depend not only on the program, but also on his own efforts.
